I'm from the lakes

I'm from the Blue Robbins

I'm from the Aggie's icecream
always choosing beween chocolate and vanilla

I'm from skip trips

I'm from the bicycles

I'm from the back yard

I am from video games

My past will never come back

Son kills parents for insurance money

A couple in their 50s was murdered by their son early Saturday morning in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

Lee, 23, confessed to killing his parents to get their life insurance money, according to Suwon Jungbu Police Station.

Police said that Lee broke into his home disguised as a burglar and stabbed his family, killing his parents and seriously wounding his two older sisters.

During police questioning, Lee said he committed the crime to get money from insurance policies under the name of his parents and sisters. Lee secretly signed contracts for life insurance that pays up to 60 million won in the case of death.

Lee had claimed to be at a friend’s house, some 200 meters away from his home, but police found a bloody mask, sneakers and gloves believed to belong to him near the crime scene. His fingerprints were also found on the murder weapon.

The news was particularly shocking as Lee calmly visited the hospital to see his surviving family members after committing the crime.

I think this reminded me of the book a lot, because this had a lot fo traits of the pearl. I asume that most families start out as a "family first" relationship. But as he starts to think of money as the main value of his life. He did a bloody, cruel act of murder to get insurance money. That is like trading your family for money. It was really similar to the book when Kino starts to changes his main prioirty family to wealth.

Reflection to Pearl

.In the book “The Pearl”, the story talks about many things about happiness, greed, wealth..I think that if the story was a parable, the lesson or moral that I get from the story would be too much greed will harm you and corrupt you. There were many different examples in the book, Kino, pearl dealer, and the doctor.

In the book, Kino was originally a man who was kind and was amiable to everyone. He was a pearl diver. Even though he was not rich, he was still happy because of his baby, wife, and canoe, anything that he could be thankful of. However, after he had found the Pearl of the World, he started to be greedy; his main purpose of finding a pearl was to pay the doctor for curing Coyotito. However, after finding a magnificent pearl, his dreams of becoming rich and successful became bigger as time went on. He was thinking of buying a rifle, giving Coyotito education, marrying Juana in the big church, and living in a new big house. So even though the pearl dealers gave a price that was way lower than he had expected it to be, he didn’t sell the pearl to the dealers and left the city. Kino could have sold the very valuable pearl with the cheap price, and still become rich, but his greed for rich became too big he couldn’t accept it.

Kino also started to start being worried of everyone, because he knows that everyone in the village wants his pearl and take it from him. He was going to the anything from protecting his wealth, and he ever killed people by doing that. But while he tried to kill the person with the rifle, he started to have a outrage and shot the rifle all around the place, and it killed his son. He was so greedy with his pearl that he lost something that was even more valuable to him. The greed for money had corrupted him to believe that money was the most important thing in all and money will allow him to do anything he could do anything he wanted to do.

Another figure that gives you a lesson about greed was the pearl dealers. If the pearls dealers didn’t go cutting the prices so much. They could of at least buy the pearl, even though the profit you make will be less. They tried so hard to maximize their profit in that moment, they just lost all the profit that they could actually make by even buying the pearl in higher price and sell it.

The last character that reflected to the moral was the doctor. He was so greedy at the start that he did not take care of Coyotito at the start. He was only thinking about the wealth that he had when he was in Europe and he tired of doing his job without any money. I’m if the doctor came and check on Coyotito, Kino would have thanked him more graciously and then there could have been an extra tip. In the end, the doctor received nothing because the pearl was thrown away and Kino couldn’t pay the price back. So his plan of getting some money off the pearl had failed.

I believe that a little bit of greed is okay. It can be like a goal that you expect to make. However if the greed overflows in you, it becomes bad and yourself becomes corrupted. Your thoughts change like how Kino becomes, you do not realize what is truly important. It may be different for other people, but this is how I interpret what the moral is.

Guess the tone

The new Ipod makes people think so much. It looks like it's a ipod, but it could work like a computer, and it could even look like a cellphone. The black case outside looks so metailc it makes people think that the plastic could be a metal. It's making people so confused because the price doesn't make sense to the expensive looking design.

Guess the Mood

Every thing was gone. The millions of dollars, the big three floor house, the luxerious Benteley, they were all gone with the bankruppcy. I felt hopeless, I thought of how I am going to live up the rest of my life without any money. However, I realized that I still have a family. I can still depend with my family, which was really the most important things to me. Because I still had my family, the sky still looks bright, and the sun shine even more brighter. The future is bright because I still had my family.

Alica Keys If I ain't got you

Some people live for the fortune

Some people live just for the fame

Some people live for the power, yeah

Some people live just to play the game

Some people think that the physical things

Define what's withinAnd I've been there before

But that life's a boreSo full of the superficial

[Chorus:]

Some people want it allBut I don't want nothing at all

If it ain't you baby

If I ain't got you baby

Some people want diamond rings

Some just want everything

But everything means nothing

If I ain't got you, YeahSome people search for a fountain

That promises forever young

Some people need three dozen roses

And that's the only way to prove you love them

Hand me the world on a silver platter

And what good would it be

With no one to share

With no one who truly cares for me

[Chorus:]

Some people want it all

But I don't want nothing at all

If it ain't you baby

If I ain't got you baby

Some people want diamond rings

Some just want everything

But everything means nothing

If I ain't got you, you, you

Some people want it all

But I don't want nothing at all

If it ain't you baby

If I ain't got you baby

Some people want diamond rings

Some just want everything

But everything means nothing

If I ain't got you, yeah

[Outro:]If I ain't got you with me baby

So nothing in this whole wide world don't mean a thing

If I ain't got you with me baby

This song says that even if you have all the wealthy you want, it doesn't if the person you love is not here.

What I would have done if had 259 million $

If I had 259 million I would buy things that I would dream of. I think my mind will go blank, and then suddenly have bunch of thoughts of winning the money. I would think of buying my dream items. I'm going to buy all my relatives a house, and I'm going to 50 millions $ to our school, so I could help the school become a better place. I'm going to save the money for the future. If I die, I'm going to give 25% of the left over and make a scholarship.

Clue #5

1.What is the theme of "About Effie"
Our group was confused of the theme, because we couldn't find the reason Effie crying is the climax of the story. I do not have much proof why this is the theme, but in my opinion, I think its something about waiting or the patience of waiting. Because it was all about waiting for "him" in the story. So I think theme is; You need to have patience if you want something to happen.

2.Find a verse from the Bible that relates to the theme of "About Effie" and include it in your written responses..
Ps 27:14 Wait for the LORD; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

1. Who is Effie waiting for?
According to the story, it is called a person or thing call "him". "Him" only comes when there is thunder, lightening, and music. I'm not really sure about who "him" is because there was barely any characterization of the person. However, according to the clue sheet, this is related to some Christ imagery. So I think it could related to Jesus.

2.Write three separate sentences from the story that might symbolize Jesus and explain why Timothy Findley might have written these into his story.

"Besides, it's not just me's after"
God loves everyone who believes him. It's not one person he cares after.

"Of course not. Don't be silly. Why if I went to Timbuctoo he'd just as soon find me there. Or in Madagascar even, I don't have to wait around in any old Toronto.
God can find us anywhere.
"This man. This man she's waiting for."
This isn't something directly connected, but I think she is waiting for Jesus, because he is going to come back to save us.

I'm not sure, but since he is the author. He gets to choose what he wants to put in about God.

3.Can non-Christian authors reveal truth about God's world?
I believe that you don't need to be Christian writer to write about God's world.Because I think that non-christian writer could write something and have some Christian traits. It's just how the reader understands the story. Because I didn't have the idea of the story having Christian beliefs in it until I was thinking of the clue questions, but after thinking of it, it made sense.

Clue #4

1. Who is a "character" in your life (a real-life person) you admire?why do admire this person?

I'm not sure if I admire anyone, but if I admire someone I think it would be my dad. There are a few reasons, but the main reason would be is his work ethic. My dad knows how to work, he knows that if he has to do his job he does it. I procrastinate a little while I work, but my dad would concentrated on his work. Another reason would be is that he likes children. When I was young, he always actively played with me unlike some other fathers. Those are things that I want to follow.

1.What specific clues can setting reveal about the theme of a short story?

Setting is one of most basic things in a story. So I think it is a great "clue" for a short story to reveal a theme. It may not control the whole story and characters, but it is a big influence to the story. For instance, you read old Korean folk stories, you can know that the theme is related to the setting that Korea was in that time. Like if the setting is Korea in the past, and talks about adults, the theme will come out as things like "respect your elders", since age is an important quality to people in Korea.

2.How does an author drop clues about characters and how their actions lead you to the theme of a story?

I think the author gives clues by using indirect characterization. Indirect characterization is showing the characters traits by their actions, thoughts, dialogues, and others. Giving clues to the charcter's traits. These traits can lead to even the theme. For example, in Harry Potter one of Harry's characterizations was love, and one of theme lead to "Love is a powerful thing".

3.What is the strongest setting you haver ever encountered in your own life?

I think that TCIS is one of the strongest setting in life. Because before I came to a TCIS, I was just a normal person going to school in Korea. Except the fact that I was lived in the US for more than half of my life. I just went to hagwon, didn't do any sports, and was just a shy guy. After I came here, I became more active, I started to play sports, becoming less shy, and having nice friends.I think that coming to TCIS, was giving me a chance to do things that I wanted to do. Like its hard to do sports while you want to concentrate on your academics in Korea, but in TCIS they gave us chances to participate, and he gave me a chance to know him better, from events like SEW.

Clue #3

What is a literary theme?
The theme of a story is the universal idea about human nature that the the writer wants to tell us. It gives you a view of what the author agrees about life. Many subjects used for a theme would be topics like love. Many people may have different insights about love, and the theme of the story about love would be just the authors view of love.

Examples
1. Love is like a flower, a flower blooms for a while and then withers.
It gives us an idea that love is temporary
2.Imagination makes a person dangerous
I heard it in a movie, doesn't remember the movie thought. The unlimited imagination makes people dangerous.
3. Every story has an ending.

3.In your opinion, what is the theme of God's plan for this world?
I think that God had a theme for making this world because he loves us. He all made us for a purpose, and I'm sure that he did for the world. In the Bible, it talks about how we should love many times, so its about our love to God. So that's why he sacrificed Jesus for us, and why he made the world.

1.What is the theme of your life, as you see it right now?
I think the theme of my life is currently, you choose how you want to live your life. I think that I am living in a very busy life. I do not have a lot of extra time to do things just for comfort. After school, I have to either go to volleyball practice, or practice basketball by myself, or study in the library. I have massive loads of homework. Travel for volleyball games. But I believe that all of these are going to pay back. For example, while I do homework and volleyball, it makes me spend a big portion of my time. However, if I didn't want to do my homework or sports, I don't need to do it. The things I do get for doing these activities are: I get to travel around with the team to get more experience, become more athletic and fit, make new friends and it will helps me with college. I'm doing all this hard work because I know that it is all going to help me and I enjoy to do it. Your life isn't chosen by anyone, its made just the way you wanted it to be.

1.How can you figure out a theme in a short story?
When you want to find out the theme of the story, you can just keep reading until you find some meaning in it, but there is a process for it. First, you look at the title to find a theme, it gives you basic idea of whats going to happen. The shot film "Bunny" gave us an idea its going to be something about a bunny, and the main character is a bunny. Second, looks for the main conflict and character, what is the internal and external conflicts that they face, you can find what the character faces. Third, you looks at the climax, and what it solves in the story. Finally the resolution and how the story ends, usually as the story ties up, it gives an idea of what the story was about.

2.What is the theme of "The Utterly Perfect Murder" and how does this theme relate to your own life.

I think the theme of the "The Utterly Perfect Murder" is a bad relationship is still a relationship. Doug Spaulding is this small guy who was always picked by Ralph Underhill. Ralph Underhill made fun of him. He made unfairs deals, he joked around with him, and he felt like he didn't really care about him as much as Doug cared about him. Doug wanted revenge, so he went looking for after like 40 years. Even though its a bad relationship, he still remembers him. You can still hate him, but if you still remember after fourty years, I think that Ralph Underhill is a important part of his life. Also for Ralph, he still remembers him after thrity years. I don't remember 90% of the people that I met in my elementary school because they werent really special to me. However for the people who felt really special to me, good or bad, I remember them very clearly.

3.How is a moral of a story different from a theme?

The moral of a story is like a life lesson that the story wants to tell you. The theme is the universal idea that the author has about human nature. You can think of the difference of the two devices as theme is a little broad then morals. Morals are usually lessons that usually everyone could agree about. For example, respect your parents. It is a moral, because is talking about how we should act and it is a lesson, and everyone would usually agree with morals. In my opinon, a theme is a point of view how you see a topic. For instance, when you talk about love, many people have different thoughts about love. Love is sad, love is short but life is long. It is usualy more arguable then a moral.

4.Read John 3:16.Is this a theme statement of God's story. How does this relate to the truth you might find in literature.

Yes, because its explaining that he loved us so much that he sacrificed Jesus for us. It's talking about how much he loves us. For everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. I think there is some relations between the verses theme and literature, or even life. For example, I remeber reading the Harry Potter. In the last book, there was a part where Harry had to sacrifice himself for others, he would need bravery for it, but since he loves everyone so much, he sacrificed him self. As Harry sacrificed himself, he did it because he needed to do it to make other people live. If he didn't love the people there, he wouldn't of have sacrificed himself. I'm not really sure, but there were many books that had similar moments.

Clue #6

1a. Define metaphor and simile

Metaphors is a figurative language that uses comparision, it does not use as or like.

Similes is another type of figurative language that uses comparision, but they use as or like unlike metaphors.
1b. (10 sent.) Why do authors use figurative language?

I think when you use figurative language, it makes me literature more beautiful. It helps the reader to think more when they read. If you use too much literal language, it becomes less interesting for the reader. Because we limit the ideas that the readers can think of when they read literature. Figurative language gives us a better idea of the details of the story. For example, you say "I ate too much pizza, I'm full.", you don't know how full the authors wants describe. You only know that he ate a lot of pizza and he is full. But we don't know how much he ate, or how full he is. However, if you use figurative language to describe the detail, you can do something like "I had millions of pieces of pizza, my stomach is like a bomb that is going to explode". You know that he is very full and he ate a lot of pizza. Since figurative language uses things like comparison and exaggeration you can get a better meaning, because it you could compare things to what it is describing to get a better understanding.
2. Love is a lemon - either bitter of sweet
The noise is music to my ears
The sea is a hungry dog

3.Matthew 5:13
13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men
4. There are many metaphors in the Bible, but I this is the one that I found in Bible Gateway. This was a confusing verse for me. But when I thought about what I studied I realized that this was a parable that I had studied in eighth grade. I didn't get what it mean during eighth grade though. So I researched the internet for ideas, it gave me an idea that salt might be describing you faith. This metaphor is explaining our faith. If it tasteless salt, it is useless. Jesus is showing us that pretending to be faithful isn't right, so it is the same as nothing.

Olleh, I am smarter than a calculator. When I play basketball, I leap like a frog, I guard like an alligator, and I wish I was lightening quick. I could beat people in fifteen on one by dunking on each of them, the basketball obeys my orders. I can be loud as a siren when I sports and when I feel energized, but I am as quiet as a ninja. I sleep like a sloth, and when I can't become a zombie. I fix computers better than Bill Gates. I can make people awkward better than a first date.

Clue #1

1.When you think about beauty, we think of something that externally nice and pleasing. So like when people say you have a beautiful face, it means that you like nice. So thats why people try to do plastic surgery. But I think that true beauty is whats in you in the inside. So a beautiful person would not be someone who did all these different kinds of makeups, but would be someone who has a pure heart, who knows what is more valuable. Sometimes we think about our about our external beauty too much, that we forget about what true beauty is. So we start to act cold or unpleasent to people who do not look good. We should not do that and go back to what we should really do, that is beauty.Even the Bible tells us that interior beauty is more important.

2.Proverbs 31:30 - "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting: but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised

1 Samuel 16:7 - "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart

1. Reader’s response or personal response is a way of reading literature by bringing in your personal experiences while you read. Reader’s response focuses on your personal thoughts, so it is like reading through color lens. When you do use reader’s response, you have to connect to meanings and words constantly. Things you have to find would be personality traits, experiences, and many different connections. How you do readers response is you first read the book. You should read it carefully so you can find more connections and words in the text. Since this is your personal thoughts or experiences, you cannot be wrong on making connections. So if you have an idea, do not be afraid because you might think it sounds weird, and does not make sense.
2. When you read many different kinds of literature, you get to learn more about the world. First using the reader’s response gives us many different kinds of points of view. As you look into literature, you can see how different people could write their thoughts about a simple thing. Reader’s response would give truths like when you always believed the Earth was flat, but a book teaches you that it is actually round. As you read and make connections, your thoughts can become universal as time goes on. Second is literature usually has a theme or moral about life. Usually, when you use reader’s response, you can get a little more out of the book than when you are doing it because you read more carefully and you can understand things better if you connect while you read.
3. I think it is important to use reader’s response because when you use reader’s response, it helps you to connect more to the text and it makes the reader more interested. First, when you connect to the text, you can think it as it is your perspective. That helps us to understand the story more clearly because you know how it feels like in a situation like this. For example, if you think of Marigolds, it is easier for us to understand since we are all teenagers; we know how we cannot control our anger easily. So it felt so like ourselves. Second, it gets us interested. As you actively connect to the text, you can find many small connections that can relate to you in many ways. That can causes us to read the story deeper, because you can believe you are very connected to the protagonist
4. I read a book called Flags of Our Fathers. It is a book about the World War II, and it is about the people who had raised the flags in the island of Iwa Jima. The actually picture of the flag raising is quite a famous picture, if you have seen any pictures of that The book had almost nothing in common with me. The background was very different and I have never experienced anything related to war before. However, they were ordinary people who had experience war, and could not forget the shock. I felt connected to that, even though I never went to war and seen those terrible moments, I know how it feels to trying going over things that shocked me. However, these people were haunted by memories that were too horrible, like one person in the story; he cried every night for a while because he lost his friend in war and after seeing all those people die. This really gave me an idea of how scary war is, and how dangerous the world is right now.

Revenge is sweet

What do you think the story will be about?
I think the story will be something about a silent murder of a shy person, who keep trying to find revenge.
When did you want to have revenge?
When people keeps annoying me and tries to provoke me about my skill to do something, I get really angry because they didn't deserve to say that to me, because they were sometimes either worse than me or somewhere equal. I really wanted explode and get revenge, but I just calmed down becuase I did not need to get angry for little provokes. After that, even though I felt angry, I decided to enjoy the day.

Class warm up

Have you ever read a book and felt you connected with a character in it? Or found a book where a character is a lot like you? Describe your experience and whether or not you think it is important to make a personal connection to literature.
I do have some personal connections but I do not have any recent literature that I remember to connect, so I decided to connect to Lizabeth. She is somewhere near our age, so I think I could understand her anger and rage she shown. As a teen, it would of been hard to control our anger, and since I experienced that. I can get the story. I think it is not necessary to make personal conncetions, but it is helpful for you to read the story by heart, because if you feel more connected to the character, you will get use to the characters situation better.

Clue 2

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world
10
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Since it introduces who Jesus is, I think it would be the introduction of the life of Christ.

1. I.Exposition. It is the start of the story, where it introduces the characters and the background like the time and place.
II. Rising action: It is the part of the story where the story introduces the conflict and the conflict keeps adding up.
III. Climax: It is the point where the conflict is in its highest point, where the story gets most exciting. It could be like the finale of a piece of music. The main character makes a change in the part of the story.
IV.Falling action: It is the where it starts to close up and the conflicts start to solve.
V. Resolution: The denouement, the ending, it is the part where the story ends.

2. It is important for stories to be structured. Because it helps making the story more organized, and the structure is made to help grab the readers attention and to help them understand the plot easier. The structure helps grabbing the readers attention because the introduction usually has a hook that grabs the readers interest that would lead on to the resolution, but if you have the resolution first and the introduction next, it is like having the answer before the question. Second, it helps the readers understand because it is in order, and you could see how the conflict got more interesting. The introduction gives the tools you need to develop on your work and it keeps going on until the climax, it gives you an outline of the story. If you not use the plot structure, the story will become very confusing, you would suddenly read the ending and then read the introduction, you would have no clue of what the story would be about.

3. When I first read the story, I didn't really get how the story flowed on. I only understood pieces of the story. I never got a overview of the story, just fragments. Like her dad cried because he believed he was no help, or how she went to Mrs. Lottie's house to destroy the marigolds. But when I organized it into a plot graph, I noticed how the story went on and how she grew as an adult. Without the plot graph, it just gave me this understanding as it was just a special day. But when I organized it, it explained the background, the problems start to add up, the character changes, and the story ends. I never knew how deep the story was, how it show the change of innocence to reality. It taught me what the marigolds real meant to the Mrs. Lottie, it was her only reason of living.

4. All stories have themes, and this story also has one. I think that the stories theme is, innocence and reality cannot coexist. Reality is a scary thing that people can't actually take care of. So children are masked from reality by innocence. Innocence is saying you have no responsibilliy for an act you do, but when you go to the real or world, or reality. You have to take responsibillity for every act you do. For example, when Lizabeth still was a kid, she did not take responsibilty of messing up Mrs. Lottie's Marigolds Because she was innocent. However, she starts seeing the unmasked world of reality. She learns that she did something wrong, and she has to take care of it. That is what an adult should do. It is really frightening when you first see the realistic world, it is so hard to take responsibillity.

Personal connections

1. In the paragraph thirty-five, Lizabeth felt ashamed of what she had done after she acted emotionally. It sometimes reminds me of myself when I do something wrong I feel ashamed of my acts for a long time

2. In the paragraph where Lizabeth had been tempted to do things that all the other kids do, it reminded me being persuaded by a bandwagon situation. I know it may not be the right thing to do, but everyone else did it so I followed as well.

3. In the paragraph where kids tried something fun to do in the long summer days, it reminded me of one day where I had nothing to do and had to say in my house.

4. In the time where Lizabeth and Joey argue during supper, it reminds my brother and me arguing a lot when my parents are busy or something.

5. When I am usually worried, I try to wake up someone sleeping or try to stay with someone like what Lizabeth did in the story. I think it is because I was scared to do something that is too hard to solve.

6. The great depression that was used in the setting remind time of the USA right now as well, the unemployment rate is still high, people still not live well enough.

7. When they talked about having a miracle in hard times, it reminded me of myself, when I did not do my homework and hoped for the teacher to forget about the project that day and that actually happened once.

8. When Lezibeth actually got extremely mad and started crushing the Marigolds, it reminded me once when I really got angry, but did not want to show it so I just start throwing stuff and hitting walls when nobody looks just to try to control my temper.

9. In the first paragraph, the writer writes how when you think of something in the past you only seem to remember only just one part of it. I think it is the same with me because sometimes when I try to think of a trip in the past, sometimes I only remember the food that I ate there, or the long car trip that we had to take.

10. In the part where the writer talks about how they did not care about getting dirty. It reminded me of how I changed, I didn’t really care about getting sweaty and dirty in the past, but now when I try to go out play like in the soccer field, I now worry that my shoe gets dirty in the process.

Plot summary

Exposition
This was not as memorable as much as other activities but this seemed liked one of the activities that seemed special. I'm a big fan of sports, and in middle school there are many inter murals you can participate in. During September, I was interested on doing cross country, because last year I was too lazy to do any sports, I really could not run long distances and I wasn't even good at running a kilometer ,and I really wanted to become more fit and increase my stamina. So I decided to go in cross country.

Rising action
We did a few practices by running around school, Hannam, and around the village. Glad that I started doing sports last year, because if not I would be running way behind even though I was not one of the fastest runners.
As we go on, I started to get ready for a fun run that we had in SAHS, we only ran about 3-4 km per practice, so I was worried if I can run through the whole thing because I never tried running one. The day came and I started the run, I was running in the same pace somewhere in the middle, and I tried hard going in a better record, but I was worried if I'm too much energy and I would be too exhausted to run the last few kilometers.

Climax
But as I started running somewhere in the 3-4 km, I didn't feel that tired as I expected it to be, so I knew that I was going to make the run and I was going to make it while rasing my pace, catching up with people who were in front during the whole race going past them. So in the last fifty meters, I started running fast like in a short track finishing in somewhere in 29 minutes. it wasn't a very good score, but for the first time running I was happy with the record, I knew that I could run 5 kilometers easily.

Falling action
I cheered for people who were also in the intermurals and who were trying really hard for their first time too, and all of our TCIS students had successfully finished the race. It was a fun race so I didn't feel exhausted as I expected to be.

Climax
We enjoyed our success in the run by going to the places where they sell Taco Bell and stuff, and Taco Bell is only in the USA bases, so I enjoyed the food as an award with my friends.

Conflict
I was scared that I wasn't going to make a 5 kilometer run.

Myself as a Reader

Write a brief paragraph of opinion on the following: Do you think that books should be made into movies? Why or why not?

I think it is okay to make books to movies, but as long as they follow the book. Many books that were made into movies, and some movies were disappointing, and I think its because the director didnt show enough detail that a book can describe, and they had changed the story line. For example, the Harry Potter series, the books was very detailed and the details had made it a exciting book. The movie had changed some parts to make the action seem dull. So as long as you find an director who could produce the movie like the book, it won't be as successful as the book.

Myself as a Reader

Write a brief paragraph about your reading habits (ex: where do you read? Do you listen to music? Do you need to be in a particular place? Do you need to have something to eat/drink as you read? Etc.)

I have a few different reading habits, like a usually like to move around a lot when I read, for a while lay down and read, and then I sit up again, and then I move somewhere else again. Another habit would be listening to music, I don't listen to music every time I read, but it helps me read when I do. I listen to any kind of music, rap, pop, Korean, and even classical if its on.

Myself as a Reader

Write a brief paragraph on what you like to read (include genres you enjoy, favorite authors, etc.)

I like to read many different types of genres, but if the title and the introduction is interesting enough for me to read through, I usually read the whole book. If I have to think of some genre, I would pick any different kinds of fictions, but I'm think of starting to write many different biographies, to expand my knowledge of reading. I don't really have a favorite author, but one author that I like to read is Lois Lowry. I read the following books of hers: The Giver, Gathering Blue, and The Messenger.

First Stab at Essential Questions

1. What are my current reading skills?

I think my current reading skill is just average, but I do read many different varieties of books. I think I could read up to books in the reading level 9

2. How can I improve and grow as a reader?

I think that I should take time and read about 30 minutes everyday, and do that constantly. I should keep trying to read books that are in the higher reading levels, so I could improve reading. Another thing is I should be reading a variety of books, not just the books that I like to read.

3. What purpose can literature serve in my life?

Literature is a way to communicate in life, to express your ideas through many different literary devices. Like some writer use satires to mock the goverment for what they are doing wrong, or they could use their life stories by writng a auto-biography.

4. What resources can I find in the library that will help me in this course and other courses?

The library has many books that we could read, supports many online databases, videos. So I think that we could use it nicely. Like we could find a book from a paragraph that we read in class, and it intrests you you could go read it, or if its about someone famous, you could go find a biography of the person.
